Liverpool are set to sign Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum having agreed on a £25m fee with the Magpies .
That’s according to the Liverpool Echo, the Netherlands international will undergo a medical at Liverpool on Friday.
It was gathered that the player will fly out to the US to meet with Jurgen Klopp and his squad if he passes the necessary tests. It is understood that the deal is worth £23m up front, with an additional £2m in add-ons.
The 25-year-old scored 11 Premier League goals for Newcastle last season, but the club would suffer relegation, prompting a desire to move on.
He will become Klopp’s sixth signing of the summer, and the second most expensive behind Sadio Mane, who cost the Reds £30m coming in from Southampton.
According to 90mins.com, the player’s brother almost confirmed the news on Thursday morning, posting a fake picture of the midfielder in a Liverpool kit along with the words ‘soon’ on his Twitter page. The tweet has since been deleted.
Liverpool have already signed Mane, Joel Matip, Marko Grujic, Loris Karius and Ragnar Klavan, and is expected to follow up the capture of Wijnaldum with even more signings.
He has lost out to former club Borussia Dortmund in the chase for Mario Gotze, but still has hopes of signing Piotr Zielinski from Udinese, as well as Mahmoud Dahoud from Borussia Mönchengladbach.
